A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. Once integrated, a crown can be secured to the top of the implant. This artificial tooth looks, feels and functions just like your natural teeth. It is also possible to use multiple implants to support a bridge or a denture restoration. At Alliance Dental Specialists in Oakville, Ontario, Dr. Naheed Mohamed, an experienced dental implantologist will assist your dentist with the surgical placement of your dental implant.
Initial Assessment: At the initial appointment, Dr. Naheed Mohamed will discuss your treatment options to replace your missing tooth or teeth. Feasibility will be assessed, x-rays are often taken and preliminary models may be prepared. A written plan will be formulated detailing the sequence of events and associated costs.
Implant Placement: Dr. Naheed Mohamed will perform a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthesia to place the implant in your jawbone. If after assessment, the underlying bone is judged to be insufficient to support the implant, a bone graft may be necessary to regenerate the bone before placing the implant. The bone graft may be carried out prior to, or at the same time as the implant placement.
Integration Period: Although some implants can be loaded into function immediately or soon after surgery, a period of 3-6 months may be required to allow the implant to fully integrate with the bone before loading it. Your own denture or a simple adhesive bridge can be worn during this healing phase.
The Restoration Phase: Once the implant has integrated with the bone, it can be brought into function with a variety of restorations. Your family & cosmetic dentist will take care of this phase for you.
Maintenance: Following the completion of your implant treatment, you will need to follow the recommended hygiene program. You will need to clean the implant thoroughly as instructed by your hygienist. You will also need to attend regular professional cleanings and checkups so that the health of the soft tissue, bone levels and integrity of the restoration are not threatened
In general, anyone missing at least one tooth and healthy enough is probably able to undergo dental implant treatment. There are some medical conditions that warrant special consideration before placing dental implants. Certain chronic diseases, heavy smoking or alcohol abuse may contraindicate dental implant treatment.
